
Devil Sticks was commissioned by the Buffet Summer Academy. Equilibristics is the subtitle which refers to the art of balanc ing and physical juggling. Like many of McAllister's works, it blends modern classical techniques with driving, rhythmic grooves and moments of controlled chaos. The music is designed to sound as though it is constantly on the edge of falling apart — much li ke a frantic, fast - paced juggling routine.

Freebirds takes its title and inspiration from the album by the iconic southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Based on the song �Free Bird� it is a driving, ecstatic showpiece for two clarinets and band. The work begins with a cadenza-like passage for the soloists, takes the listener through some high beautiful lyrical passages and amazing extended techniques for clarinet leading to the ending in a virtuosic cadenza. This piece grabs hold of the listener and never lets go with rapid technical passages that emulates a dueling electric guitar of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Uncle Sam's Songbag is a three - movement dramatic song cycle . Scored for mezzo - soprano, clarinet, and piano, the piece explores American identity through the lens of political and social satire, featuring highly theatrical vocal lines and extended clarinet techniques. The work wa s commissioned by the Florida State Music Teachers Association and features a set of distinct, character - driven movements . McAllister often uses the piece to comment on the derogation of American culture, blending humor with serious musical motifs.

Screaming Azaleas was awarded the Ladislav Kubik International Prize i n Composition. This work is a song cycle for Soprano, Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Harp, Piano, and Percussion . The theme of Screaming Azaleas is a southern tragedy that tells the story of a mother finding her drowned son at the edge of a pond. The grief process and pain of losing a child ties each song together as the mother also deals with her own mortality.
